Cafayate, as a small town, turned out to be something of a misfit for my conditions.  Great place to rent a bike with drunk 20somes and tour vineyards.  Great place to be a lame porteño clueless as to anything precolombian, or for that matter, even rural.  Somewhat lame place to be for 24hours by yourself, in the off season.  Thankfully, i wandered around a bit and found not only this bizarre plexiglass temple to a local saint, but also the best huaschalocro (i.e. vegetarian locro) of my life, at a rad workingclass “comedor” on the literal edge of town.
