Rare front view. The house is currently a private residence. The front of the house faces an inaccessible garden, so the uglier back side of the house is usually photographed from the street behind the house. Klimt mosaics line the interior walls.

The Broken Column House is so named because it takes the form of a ruined classical column: truncated, jagged and riven with fissures. It was built by the aristocrat François Nicolas Henri Racine de Monville who used it as his main residence during the years immediately before the French Revolution.

the craziest part of brigham young’s beehive house was his “COMMISSARY”— where he divvied up supplies for his many, many houses full of women and children. obviously, the tour skimmed quickly over that part!

i can’t recommend enough, to fans of weird kitschy design and outsider art, brigham young’s “beehive house,” in downtown SLC, and it’s free missionary-guided tour. i’ll up more photos when i get a chance.
